Named in honor of Hydra, a founding member of the Texas Rollergirls, the Hydra Trophy was first awarded to the WFTDA National Champion in 2008.  Throughout the Regional Tournaments of September and October, which lead up to the Declaration Of Derby in November, no fewer than 40 WFTDA teams will battle for the right to take home this prestigious piece of hardware. Visit the Rankings page for more details on the Regional events!

The 2008 winners, Gotham Girls Roller Derby, are surely eager to repeat the performance that they displayed last year in Portland, OR at the championship Northwest Knockdown tournament, and the team has earned the opportunity with a second-place finish at the Wicked Wheels Of The East tournament in Raleigh, NC. Having passed that test, the team will visit Philadelphia this November, where eleven other teams from around the United States will be just as eager to prevent a repeat and earn a place in derby history as the second organization to win the National title and the Hydra Trophy.

Prior to the Hydra's creation, WFTDA national champions were determined at Dust Devil in Tucson, 2006, where Texas took the crown, and at 2007's Texas Shootout in Austin, at which the Kansas City Roller Warriors surpassed the event hosts as the premier team of the year.
